Up in the Air

What’d I miss? Up in the Air has so much buzz around it, surely I missed something. It’s a good movie, but whoever is promoting it could probably sell ice to Eskimos, because the movie just wasn’t all that …or maybe I missed something.

George Clooney stars in Up in the Air, and it could be loosely based on his real life (it’s not, but it could be). Clooney, who bet Nicole Kidman $10,000 dollars that he wouldn’t be married by age 40, plays bachelor, Ryan Bingham. Side note: Clooney won the bet. Kidman sent him a $10,000 check, but he returned it with a note saying, “'Double or nothing for another 10 years.” Anyway, getting back to the movie...Ryan (Clooney) spends most of his time with strangers; he’s either flying with them or firing them. Then, he meets Alex, played by Vera Farmiga, and realizes, maybe, he’s found that special someone. Maybe, he doesn’t want to be alone. Maybe, he wants a closer relationship…but, maybe, not.

The film is appropriately rated R for language and some sexual content.

There’s a social connection to our current economic situations because of all the lay-offs that take place during the film. Even with that relevant piece I still don’t get all the excitement around this film. As far as reviews go, I’m pretty much alone on this because Up in the Air is nominated for more Golden Globes than any other film. I’m more than willing to recommend you JOG slowly to this movie, but any faster than that leaves me asking "What'd I miss?"

Invictus

Nelson Mandela, portrayed to perfection by Morgan Freeman, in the film Invictus demonstrates 1 Corinthians 13:13 “to a tee”. This scripture states, “And now abide faith, hope, love…but the greatest of these is love.” No matter what religion or faith you are, most people agree that more love in the world is a good thing.

The word “Invictus”, is the title of a poem Mandela had in his prison cell, which declares, "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.” Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul, simplifies this concept to, “Take 100% Responsibility.” This film exemplifies the power of loving others and taking 100% responsibility in a masterful way!

Invictus is based on the true story of how Nelson Mandela brought his country together by inspiring the South African rugby team to win the World Cup Championship. If I had to describe this film in one word, it would be FORGIVENESS. Nelson Mandela personifies forgiveness, which leads to greatness! If Oscar doesn’t nod in the direction of Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon for their excellent performances in this film, he will be sooo in the doghouse!

It is rated PG-13 for brief strong language; darn that strong language. Without it I’d recommend this film for everyone at any age because of the positive seeds it plants in our minds!

Be patient in the beginning, the film works like a marathon, not a sprint and builds up steam as it goes. I recommend you get on your running shoes, baby, and RACE to this movie. You will be inspired to be the best you can be and help the world be a better place.

Precious

The film Precious is nominated for Best Picture by the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild. In addition both the lead actress, Gabourey Sidibe and the supporting actress, Mo’Nique, are nominated for a Golden Globe and Screen Actors award, which is often a good hint of the direction Oscar is leaning. With that said, I am not recommending you see this film.

If you saw Monster’s Ball, which Hailey Berry earned an Oscar, it felt like a walk in the park compared to Precious. I realize stirring up emotions is what makes a good film, but to the degree it’s done in Precious it’s too heartbreaking.

Precious is the story of a girl, severally abused by her family, who chooses to make many good decision in spite of the hand she’s been dealt. Yes, it’s Oscar worthy, which would usually be a *****Race rating. However, I’m suggesting you RACE PAST Precious.

How can a movie be Oscar worthy, yet, I advise you don’t go see it? To be frank, I’m not sure. But, as I write this review I realize the film is brilliantly executed and there is hope at the end but the heaviness is simply too much for me to endorse. This film is rated R for child abuse including sexual assault and pervasive language.

R.A.N.’s Rating For Precious = *****Race PAST This Movie (due to the dark, dark, darkness of the majority of this film I’m NOT recommending you see it )

When R.A.N. Met Oscar

Similar to the relationship of Harry and Sally in When Harry Met Sally (1989), Oscar and I don’t always agree. Prior to 1991 we had a few mutual interest such as Rain Man (1988) and Pretty Women (1990), but as a general rule I didn’t concur with many of his opinions.

Then along came The Prince of Tides (1991) starring Barbara Streisand and Nick Nolte. The Prince of Tides is the ONLY movie I've seen TWO times in ONE day. It got Oscar’s attention too, and he gave the film seven nods. However, he overlooked Barbara Streisand twice, in both the Best Director and Best Actress categories. I realize Streisand is controversial in her politics, but Oscar, come on; you’re supposed to be objective here. Nonetheless, for the first time we saw eye to eye on the majority of nods and that’s when the chemistry between us began.

For the next 6 years I observed him from afar. Often wondering what he was thinking, especially, when it came to The Crying Game (1992) and The English Patient (1996). Yet, we still had some things in common like The Fugitive (1993) and Braveheart (1995). Still, there was no commitment until 1997.

Then, in 1997 we met, again, via Good Will Hunting which was written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. We both were of the same mind and found this film exceptional. Oscar gave it the attention it deserved; nine nominations and two wins. The rest is history, we’ve been together ever since.

Every year I race to the movies that get Oscar’s buzz and nods, and then we meet together on Oscar Night. Like any relationship, Oscar and I still don't always agree, and, unfortunately, he always seems to get the final say. But, we’ve had some good memories together over the last 11 years.

Taking a look down memory lane, here are just a few of the nominations we’ve both enjoyed…

Shakespeare in Love (1998), Erin Brockovich (2000), A Beautiful Mind (2001), Million Dollar Baby (2004), The Pursuit of Happiness (2007) and most recently Slumdog Millionaire (2008)…..

Will we agree this year? Only time will tell. So, remember when you make a run to the movies, check here to see if I already R.A.N. to The Movie and what my review is.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a bit of a stretch. ”Good” Mr. Fox…sure, it's a good movie. Or, “Family” Mr. Fox, because it's appropriate for the entire family. Oh, or maybe, “Big Name” Mr. Fox since George Clooney, Meryl Streep and a star-studded cast do the voiceovers…but Fantastic Mr. Fox, um…not so much.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is based on the children’s book titled the same. Mr Fox, voiced by George Clooney, is the Robin Hood of animals. He steals from the farmers to provide for animals less fortunate. The farmers decide to band together and set a trap for Mr. Fox, which affects him, his family and others.

It’s rated PG for action, smoking and slang humor. Instead of using foul language the animals say, “What the cuss?” Granted you get to pick the “cuss” word that applies. You could choose, “What the heck?”, but I must admit that wasn’t the first word that came to my mind. So, parents be prepared for the possibility of your child responding to your request or directions with, “What the cuss?” mimicking the movie. Just a little heads up.

As a family we agreed this movie is worthy of a JOG, which means it’s GOOD, but not fantastic.

The Blind Side

TOUCHDOWN! Go Sandra! It’s your birthday…not really…party anyway! Give it up to Sandra Bullock who gives an excellent performance portraying spunky, real-life Leigh Anne Touhy in The Blind Side.

The Blind Side is the inspiring true story about a Tennessee family who takes in a homeless African American boy, Michael Oher, and it forever changes his life. Everyone should see this movie during the holiday season. It helps us give thanks for what we have and reminds us how making a difference in one life can ultimately touch many.

The movie is so close to PG, but gets pushed to PG-13 due to one scene involving brief violence, drug and sexual references. Depending on the maturity of your kids I think it’s appropriate for children 10 and older.

No doubt, you will leave this movie cheering! Although, I don’t think the cheers are loud enough for Oscar to yell Bullock’s name for a nomination. Why? Because if Oscar is his typical self, the movie is too “feel good” …or maybe he’ll surprise us like he did with Erin Brockovich (Julia Roberts). No matter what Oscar thinks, feeling good is a great thing any time of year, and especially during the holidays. So after you’ve had your turkey and pecan pie grab the family and RUN to see The Blind Side.

Amelia

We all know flying is the fastest way to travel, but the movie Amelia feels like you're on the slow boat to China. Amelia, follows the true story of Amelia Earhart the legendary women who made aviation history as the first female to fly across the Atlantic. I thought the movie was a sure fire Oscar contender, but the film never got off the ground, similar to Earhart’s runway crash in 1937 when a tire blew during take-off and the plane never got in the air.

Earhart was humiliated by her accident on the runway. I wouldn't go as far as to say Hilary Swank, who plays Earhart in the film, should be humiliated by her portrayal. Let's just say she won't be getting a call from Oscar for this role.

The film is appropriately rated PG for some sensuality, language, thematic elements and smoking.

For a film with such potential it really falls short in its character development along with the acting and directing. If you're looking for a way to fill time one afternoon and you're finished with your holiday shopping, don’t need anything from the grocery store and your sock drawer is clean, then you can leisurely WALK to this movie. If you just want to brush up on your history facts, simply Google "Amelia Earhart" and you’ll get all the information you need and have time to spare.

The Informant!

Right here, right now, I must tell you Matt Damon, who stars in The Informant!, is one of my favorite actors. And, Good Will Hunting, written by Damon and his best friend, Ben Affleck, is one of my favorite movies. I love the storyline and the acting in Good Will Hunting. Yet, what won me over was the tenacity shown by Damon and Affleck in creating, selling and starring in such a brilliant film. Ultimately, these two childhood friends, who were basically no-names in Hollywood, won an Oscar for best screenplay and the rest is history!

So, it was with great expectations I went to go see Damon in The Informant! Based on the true story of Mark Whitacre (Damon), a corporate whistleblower, who turns out to be a compulsive liar. Surprisingly, Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s 11, 12 and 13) decided to make this film a comedy. Something about this didn't resonate for me. Now, if you’ve seen the movie or read a review, you may be thinking, “Come on, Rachele, it’s a satire. You just didn’t get it.” And, you’d be right. I just didn’t get the humor of a habitual liar, who ultimately served 8 years in prison and tried to commit suicide two times. Realizing this is a story based on a real person, who apparently had a real mental illness, didn’t transfer to any kind of funny or comedy for me.

The one lesson reinforced by Whitacre and The Informant! is "Honesty is the best policy." Since most of us learned that from our parents you can save your money and SKIP PAST this “liar, liar pants on fire” movie.

Julie & Julia

Absolutely divine! I LOVE Julie & Julia! This movie is based on 2 MOSTLY true stories and combined to serve up 1 amazing movie. Did I mention I LOVE this movie?!? Granted, there are several variables that enhanced my infatuation.

Variable #1-Julie, played by Amy Adams, decides to share her passion for cooking through a blog. I know someone that recently started a blog…oh, right, that someone would be ME!!

Variable #2-Julia Child, played to perfection by Meryl Streep, writes a book about cooking. I know someone that recently started writing a book...oh, right, that someone would be ME!!

Variable #3- Both Julie and Julia’s husbands were their biggest fans. I got choked up during a scene when Julia’s book had been declined, yet again and Paul, her husband, is so loving, supportive and believes in her 100%. Was his name Paul or Jerry? Hummmm...I know someone married to a supportive husband named Jerry.....Oh, right that someone would be ME! (Jerry is my husband of 20 years and MY biggest fan!)

The above variables are in favor of the movie Julie & Julia. Working against it is the fact I have NO passion for cooking. I’m so thankful for Marie and A.J. They make my life much easier. In case you haven’t met them yet, Marie's full name is Marie Calendar, a local restaurant that supplies my annual Thanksgiving & Christmas dinners. A.J.'s is our local grocery store that has delicious pre-cooked meals and is responsible for most of our family dinners. Even though it may appear this is a movie about cooking, it's really a movie about finding your passion and sharing it with others.

The rating of PG-13 is appropriate for brief strong language and some sensuality.

So, drum roll please...it’s official, we have our 1st RACE To This Movie recommendation and I predict Meryl Streep will be hearing from Oscar for this role. With that said, stop now, check your local listing movie times for Julie & Julia and RACE To This Movie!

Funny People

What’s the best thing about the movie Funny People? The fact that after about 10 minutes I walked out and asked a manager if I could switch movies and watch Julie and Julia (see review)!

Apparently, the writers of Funny People think another “F” word is what creates comedy and decided to use it a bazillion times in the beginning of the movie. I chose to SKIP Past the rest of the movie. When I got home and discovered it's rated R due to "language and crude sexual humor throughout.." I realized the dialogue must have remained the same and that's just not funny!

Inglorious Basterds

Gory is the first word that comes to mind when I think about Inglorious Basterds. The next word that comes to mind is…oh, I guess the next two words that come to mind are Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction). In typical QT style a graphic, captivating and humorous movie is created that kept me intrigued the entire 2 hours and 23 minutes.

The movie begins with the disclaimer of “Once Upon A Time…..” making it clear this isn’t a movie based on Hitler/Nazi historical facts. In Tarantino fashion he adds a reference to Cinderella assuring us this is a fable. Then as if to say, "Remember this is make-believe" he slips one final reference to the classic fiction of Romeo and Juliet.

Brad Pitt is the star in this movie, but he shines brighter thanks to Christopher Waltz, who plays his nemesis, Nazi Colonel Hans Landa. Waltz creates a character you will love to hate and received the Best Actor Award at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival for this role. Many say he is certain to get a call from Oscar.

This film is definitely appropriately rated R for strong graphic violence, language and brief sexuality. If you can get past the gory violence this movie is extremely entertaining and actually quite amusing. Unfortunately, the gore factor slows me down from a run to a quick jog to see Inglorious Basterds.

R.A.N. To Blockbuster: The Soloist (New DVD Release)

When it comes to movies based on a true story, happy endings are best and hopeful endings can work. The true story told in The Soloist is more hopeful than happy. Unfortunately, due to the slow pace of the story, The Soloist, didn’t really work.

Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.), a L.A. Times columnist meets, by happenstance, a homeless man, Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Fox), and befriends him. I should say, befriends him to the best of his abilities. Ayers, who once attended Julliard, is plagued with mental illness and Lopez has a past of letting people down, especially, his ex-wife, (Catherine Keener). This combination makes for a challenging friendship and hence, creates a movie that is more hopeful than happy.

The character’s personal issues aren’t the only problems this movie has. The movie dragged, possibly, due to the fact the author of the story is Lopez himself, with it being his life experience it seems he tried to include too many of the details. The acting is good, but not great. Lastly, the movie is appropriately rated PG-13 for thematic elements, some drug use and language.

Due to the slow pace of the movie I wouldn’t recommend it for family night. Instead, take a look at one of my favorite, happy ending true stories: The Rookie with Dennis Quaid, The Pursuit of Happiness with Will Smith or
Invincible with Mark Wahlberg.

Aliens in the Attic AND G-Force

It’s the end of summer and families are looking for ways to spend their final days before school starts. Both, Aliens in the Attic and G-force are appropriately rated PG and pretty safe for the entire family, however, Aliens is a little scarier.

The first criteria for parents to enjoy either of these movies is to lower your expectations….did you just think, “They are already low.”? Good, go ahead and take them down another notch and you'll be pleased with your decision to get out of the heat, out of the house and in a cool place snacking on popcorn with the kiddos! (If you live someplace cool, you might just want to go to the park...with record breaking heat in Arizona that really isn't an option right now.)

My son, Ethan (12), and I agree G-force was slightly better than Aliens but, depending on the age and sex of your kids your family may vote differently. Ashley Tisdale, in Aliens, will get many tween girls’ vote, while younger kids may like the animation of the genuine pigs in G-Force.

Depending on how hot it is in your area you may want to WALK quickly from the car to the theatre, but don’t over exert yourself with a JOG, neither movie is worth breaking a sweat!

Public Enemies

I liked John Dillinger, yes, that John Dillinger, the bank robber and cold blooded murderer. How does someone actually like a treacherous criminal and feel disappointed when he dies? Answer: Johnny Depp. Depp’s portrayal of Dillinger in Public Enemies brings out a human side of the legendary bank robber that I didn’t expect going into the movie.

Christian Bale plays the key FBI agent leading the hunt for Dillinger. Bale does a good job, however, there were times I still saw him as Batman. I never thought of Jack Sparrow, from Pirates of the Caribbean while watching Depp.

Marion Cotillard plays Dillinger’s “girl” and she brings a vulnerability and naiveté to the role that is brilliant. At times during the film I found myself wanting Dillinger to just stop robbing banks and killing people and run away with Billie and live happily ever- after. Needless to say, that didn’t happen.

This movie is more drama, than suspense/thriller and it is appropriately Rated R for gangster violence and some language. If you’re looking for something light hearted this isn’t your movie, but if you want something you can sink your teeth into run to this intelligent depression era gangster movie.

The Ugly Truth

The Ugly Truth is a romantic comedy that attempts to shed light on men and women’s true nature. Key word: ATTEMPTS. Let me share my top 5 TRUTHS from this movie

  1. Truth be told, Katherine Heigl has nothing ugly about her. Truly, she’s a doll.
  2. Truth be told, Gerard Butler often appears to literally be talking out of the left side of his mouth and the right side doesn't move. I don’t know if this was part of his character or something he regularly does. Truthfully, I found it annoying.
  3. Truth be told, it’s appropriately Rated R for language and sexual content. Really, some of it was over the top for me.
  4. Truth be told, I took one piece of advise from this movie and have implemented it in my marriage. I have committed to my husband to stop back seat driving. Frankly, he's thrilled.
  5. Truth be told, you can walk to this movie or skip past it and go see the movie The Proposal, with Sandra Bullock. Honestly, it is a better movie and since I didn't write a review for The Proposal this gives me a chance to recommend it!

500 Days Of Summer (Wide Release Aug. 7th)

500 Days of Summer is a romantic comedy that follows a different channel than is customary. So, if you’re looking for a romantic comedy that follows the typical plot of: 1. boy meets girl; 2. boy and girl have conflict; 3. boy and girl end up happily ever after… THEN, go see a different movie called The Proposal, a hilarious and paint-by-the-numbers romantic comedy.

HOWEVER, if you’re feeling frisky and want to see a unique spin on a romantic comedy go check out 500 Days of Summer, an independent film showcased at Sundance Film Festival. Anyone that has experienced the twist and turns of love, especially young love, can relate to this film.

It is rated PG-13 for some sexual material and language. Overall, the comedy is created through humorous dialogue and an unpredictable story line. There is one unnecessary visual in regards to a former boyfriend named Puma. This is brief and when you hear his name, if you brought kids, be prepared to cover their eyes and you might want to close yours too!

The movie is 95 minutes long and about 45 minutes into it, I felt a brief lull. The lull didn’t last long and when the movie was over, a sold out theatre began to applaud. As a general rule when this happens I would say, run to this movie, but with the brief slow down in the middle of the movie, you can take your time and just JOG to This Movie.

The Hurt Locker (Limited Release)

When a movie stirs up multiple emotions I think it’s a success. While watching The Hurt Locker I was often on the edge of my seat in anticipation, had tears in my eyes due to the reality and someway still managed to chuckle several times. The main emotion I felt was gratitude to the men and women who fight for our country.

This film is appropriately rated "R" because it gives a very clear depiction of what I imagine war is and the raw emotions of those fighting. However, it isn’t a movie with a political agenda; instead it is a drama-suspense that allows you to see into the heart and soul of three men who are teamed together on a bomb squad unit in Iraq.

I am not very familiar with the three main actors (Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie & Brian Geraghty) but based on their acting in this film, we will be seeing more of them. In addition to the main characters there are cameos by Ralph Fiennes and Evangeline Lilly (Lost).

Usually when I see a weekday matinee, there are more women than men in the audience. Today this wasn't the case, approximately 60-70% of the audience was male. There were men in groups of 2-3, ranging in age from their 20's to 70's. They may have been buddies, father-son, grandfather-son but the theatre was definitely dominated by males.

Based on this I would say MEN want to RACE To This Movie, WOMEN might be more prone to JOG To This Movie and if you are looking for a DATE NIGHT movie I recommend a compromise so grab your sweetie and RUN To This Movie an excellent thriller that will leave you feeling thankful and a bit surprised by the ending.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

I am on vacation on Coronado Island in California. Yesterday it was a sunny CA day and we were planning to go to the beach after lunch. All that changed when my husband and son learned the NEW Harry Potter movie just opened. Suddenly the beach is on the back burner and HP has taken over the day. Really? What about tomorrow? What about when we get back to Phoenix with NO BEACH? What about waiting until it comes out on DVD? But it was 2-1 in favor of running to the movies.

All this said to let you know I have never gotten into the Harry Potter craze...EVER. That all changed yesterday with movie number 6! When the movie was over, I was ready to rent the 5 previous films for a movie marathon. I have seen a couple of the movies in the series, but kept looking at my watch to see when the 3 hours would be over. Yesterday, I only looked to see if I could wait until the end to go to the bathroom!

So if you are already a fan, you will love the movie, if you aren't it could change with this latest addition. I don't know what the others have been rated, this is PG and I think the "fear" factor should put it at PG-13.

If you haven't seen previous HP's you will easily be able to follow the story line, however, I can see how watching all the movies you could find more humor and connections with the characters.

I always loved Bewitched growing up and have watched many episodes with my son. I'm surprised with how much I enjoy Bewitched that I have just come around to enjoying Harry, but better late than never!
